Pet food demand has remained high throughout the pandemic. Research confirms that the pandemic-driven shift in consumer behavior toward higher pet food purchases is mostly online.

Pet food trading and fodder trading is a highly regulated business by the Public Health department of the Dubai Municipality. And severe penalties are imposed upon traders violating these regulations.

A commercial trading license must be obtained from the relevant licensing authorities as well as a permit with the specific activities from the public health department.

Furthermore, specific requirements for the premises where the pet food will be stored must also be followed, inspected, and approved.

Dubai Municipality requirements for storing feed inside the establishment.

  • The feed should be from well-known sources and conform to the approved standards and specifications.
  • Ensuring the validity of the feed and the safety of the packages.
  • It is forbidden to accumulate fodder in large quantities and at excessive heights, and to leave appropriate distances between the stored feed and the ceiling of the store (not less than 40 cm) to allow air movement inside the store and prevent spoilage of the feed.
  • The feed should be placed on treated plastic or metal bases.
  • It is necessary to install a scale to read the temperatures and relative humidity, provided that it is in a suitable place.
  • Good control of temperature and relative humidity inside the store to maintain the validity of the feed and not to be damaged through the presence of thermometers attached to the warehouse facilities.
  • The feed should be separated from each other according to its quality.
  • Allocate separate places for storing cleaning materials and disinfectants.
  • It is not allowed to store any materials not used in the exercise of the activity inside the warehouse.
  • The spoiled and expired fodder must be disposed of according to the regulations of Dubai Municipality and proof must be provided.
  • The establishment must be kept clean permanently and must be free of waste and dust.

Dubai Municipality conditions for storing pet food in a food establishment (supermarkets)

  • All foods must be registered with the Veterinary Services Department.
  • Maintaining the cleanliness of the establishment and shelves permanently and getting rid of debris and dust.
  • All food and supplies must be valid.
  • Food containers that are folded or open should be discarded.
  • It is not allowed to mix animal food and human food in one place in the establishment.
  • Identify the pet food corner with a plate.

Location:

To obtain approval from the Dubai Municipality, the site should be far from residential areas, schools and hospitals in order to prevent noise, inconvenience, and odors
