What is Emirates ID?
An identity card issued by Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship. It is a legal requirement for all UAE citizens and residents to apply for one and carry it with them at all times. The Emirates ID is used:
- to get government services
- to vote in the elections of the Federal National Council
- as a travel document for UAE citizens to travel within the GCC
- as a document to pass immigration through the eGates and smart gates at several airports in the UAE.
Note: As per Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, it is against the law to seize the Emirates ID card of other people. Companies are not allowed to withhold the Emirates ID cards of their employees or their customers and visitors. They are only allowed to take personal data on ID cards. In case of violation, cardholders should refer the case to the judicial authorities.

How to get your renewed Electronic Emirates ID?
📌The authority stated that the electronic version of the ID is an exact copy of the printed card and is available via the authority’s smart application “ICA UAE Smart”.
📌The electronic version can be used via “QR Code” scanning technology, to enable immediate reading of the card, as it is automatically generated when entering the customer’s document wallet in the smart application. The electronic ID card is characterized by all the data shown on the card, through reading it directly from the authority’s database. This process helps service authorities to verify the effectiveness of the issued card in case the printed card is not available.
Steps to follow:
- Install the ICA UAE SMART app through the App Store or Play Store.
- Log in by UAE Pass or create a Personal account.
- Select the Emirates ID option.
- Select the view option(eye icon) to see the Emirates ID card.
